Pascrell Praises Supreme Court Ending Trump Tax Charade

PATERSON, NJ – U.S. Rep. Bill Pascrell, Jr. (D-NJ-09), the Chairman of the House Ways and Means Subcommittee on Oversight, today praised the U.S. Supreme Court’s refusal to delay any longer the Way and Means Committee’s legal request for Donald Trump’s business and personal tax returns, opening the way for the panel receive the documents after years of delays.

“It has been 1,329 days since our committee sought Donald Trump’s tax returns – almost as long as the American Civil War,” said Chairman Pascrell. “And for 1,329 days, our request made under law has been delayed, obfuscated, and blocked by Donald Trump and his adjutants in the government and the courts. Our right to receive these documents is under a century-long statute and our wide Article I legislative and oversight powers. The Supreme Court is right to keep its nose out of this case. I have led this fight for over five long years because it is bigger than one man or one party. It is about accountability and fairness. I am sick thinking about all the taxpayer money that has been wasted. At long last the charade should today be over and we should get these documents transmitted to the desk of our committee chairman as soon as possible.”

Rep. Pascrell has been the most vocal proponent of the Congress reviewing Donald Trump’s tax returns. Since February 2017, Pascrell has led the call for the chairman of the Committee on Ways and Means to invoke Section 6103 of the tax code to obtain Trump’s tax returns. In the 115th Congress, Republicans voted 18 times to block Democratic resolutions seeking the tax returns. In March 2020, Pascrell had a fiery exchange with disgraced former Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin for his illegal refusal to provide Trump’s tax returns to the House Ways and Means Committee.
