Pascrell Supports New Jersey Journalists’ Drive for Unionization
Labor strength will protect media jobs under attack by rapacious Wall Street pirates
PATERSON, NJ – U.S. Rep. Bill Pascrell, Jr. (D-NJ-09) today praised efforts by dozens of New Jersey journalists seeking unionization at three Gannett newspapers owned by GateHouse Media, a hedge fund that has a history of firing reporters and imposing pay cuts.
“Incisive local journalism forms the foundation of healthy communities. We can draw a straight line from deteriorating independent media to our growing national divisions,” said Rep. Pascrell. “We desperately need more local journalists covering our communities and holding power accountable – the future of our democracy actually depends on it. So the formation of the Record Guild to protect their jobs is natural and I support it wholeheartedly.”
Rep. Pascrell has been an outspoken supporter of local and independent journalism and a relentless critic of big business dismantling local media. In February 2019, Pascrell loudly opposed the sale of the Gannett chain to a hedge fund with a history of looting businesses and firing thousands of employees.
