Passaic County Municipal Leaders Endorse State Senator Nellie Pou for Congress

Paterson, NJ — Under the steadfast leadership of Passaic County Democratic Chairman John Currie, municipal leaders across the Passaic County portion of New Jersey’s 9th Congressional District have united in recognizing the critical importance of keeping this congressional seat in Passaic County. They have strongly endorsed State Senator Nellie Pou to succeed the late Congressman Bill Pascrell. This endorsement comes ahead of the special convention where Democratic county committee members will select the party’s nominee for the November General Election.

Leaders from Paterson, Passaic, Clifton, Hawthorne, Prospect Park, Haledon, North Haledon, Wayne, and Pompton Lakes are united in their support for Senator Pou, recognizing her as the candidate best equipped to continue Congressman Pascrell’s legacy of service and leadership.

“Passaic County has always taken pride in the exceptional quality of its leaders, and this is reflected in the outstanding candidates who expressed interest in succeeding Congressman Pascrell,” the municipal leaders said in a joint statement. “Assemblywoman Shavonda Sumter, Assemblyman Benjie Wimberly, Paterson Mayor Andre Sayegh, and State Senator Nellie Pou are all remarkable public servants who have contributed greatly to our community. However, as we look to the future, we believe that Senator Pou’s experience, dedication, and vision make her the best choice to represent our district in Washington.”

Senator Pou’s decades of experience in the New Jersey Legislature and prior work in city government have earned her widespread respect and support. Notably, she first stepped into the New Jersey Assembly to replace Bill Pascrell when he was elected to Congress, making her uniquely qualified to continue his legacy. If elected in November, she would also make history as the first Latina congresswoman from New Jersey.

“As municipal leaders, our priority is to ensure that the families and residents of Passaic County continue to have a strong voice in Congress. We are confident that Senator Pou will be that voice, and we are proud to endorse her as the next representative of the 9th Congressional District,” the leaders concluded.

The Democratic county committee members from Passaic, Bergen, and Hudson Counties will meet on Thursday, August 29, 2024, to select the Democratic nominee.
