Passaic County Police Academy Upholds Excellence in Law Enforcement Training

WAYNE, NJ — The Passaic County Police Academy continues to lead the way in comprehensive, high-quality training for law enforcement recruits, with a strong commitment to the standards set forth by the New Jersey Police Training Commission (PTC). On a Friday in June, PTC field representatives observed the Mid-Term Physical Training Assessment for one of the Academy classes, marking another successful benchmark in the Academy’s ongoing mission to prepare recruits for the demands of modern policing.

Held at both the Academy campus and the track and field facilities at Passaic County Technical Institute, the assessment tested 102 recruits through a rigorous sequence of physical challenges: vertical jump, sit-ups, 300-meter run, pushups, and a 1.5-mile run. Twenty certified PTC instructors representing departments from across the region guided and evaluated the recruits, ensuring compliance with PTC physical standards and instructional conduct.

“All instructors on site were professional, appropriately attired, and exemplified the discipline and dedication that define our Academy,” said Chief Gary Giardina, Director of the Police Academy. “Their leadership sets the tone, not just for the day, but for the recruits’ entire careers. We are proud to maintain full compliance with PTC regulations and uphold the highest training standards.”

Recruits received detailed instructions and hands-on demonstrations prior to each event. The evaluation was carefully structured with appropriate rest periods, water breaks, and a focus on safety and technique. The process was efficient, fair, and in full alignment with PTC guidelines.

“Public safety begins with exceptional training, and the Passaic County Police Academy continues to set the standard,” said Commissioner Director Pat Lepore. “We are committed to supporting a program that not only prepares officers to meet the physical demands of the job, but also instills the ethical foundation, mental resilience, and community-oriented mindset essential to modern policing. The professionalism of our recruits is a direct reflection of the Academy’s excellence.”

The Academy’s rigorous instruction adheres closely to the PTC Standards of Conduct for Instructors, which emphasize professional demeanor, courtesy, knowledge, and leadership. These expectations shape a learning environment that challenges recruits while supporting their development as public servants.

"Every recruit deserves to be trained by someone who models the integrity and professionalism that policing demands,” said Chief Giardina. “We hold our instructors to that high standard every day.”

As Passaic County continues to invest in public safety and regional partnerships, the Police Academy remains a cornerstone of training excellence. Preparing the next generation of officers to serve with honor and distinction.
