Paterson Charter School for Science and Technology Receives 2026 Lighthouse Award for Expanding Access to Dual Enrollment

Trenton, New Jersey – Friday, June 5, 2026 – Paterson Charter School for Science and Technology (PCSST) proudly accepts the 2026 Lighthouse Award from the New Jersey Department of Education (NJDOE) recognizing the school for its remarkable dedication to increasing equity in dual enrollment.

PCSST increased participation for Hispanic and Black students each by 30% from the 2021-22 school year to 2023-24, according to information submitted to the NJDOE. The school eliminated financial barriers to course participation by covering 100% of tuition, fees and material costs for students, as well as partnering with 9 college and university partners to serve 130 students in fields such as engineering and healthcare.

“We are proud to accept this award in recognition of our work to promote equity in dual enrollment programs for a diverse array of students. By using a data-driven approach, we ensure that students are prepared for courses that align with their academic readiness and career preparations, and tracking of PSAT and NJSLA subgroup performance and credit attainment ensures continuous improvement and equitable outcomes for all students,” said Riza Gurcanli, Lead Person at PCSST.

Student agency has been central to PCSST’s dual enrollment program since its inception in 2012. Through surveys and academic planning discussions, students share their interests, career goals, and course preferences. This input directly shapes program offerings and pathways, ensuring alignment between student aspirations and available opportunities. By empowering students to take ownership of their academic trajectory, PCSST fosters a culture of belonging and ambition, helping many first-generation college-bound students earn an Associate’s degree alongside their high school diploma.

“We thank the New Jersey Department of Education for recognizing PCSST as a 2026 Lighthouse School and for highlighting the work of a high-performing public charter school to expand access to college-level courses for Paterson students. Charter schools are uniquely suited to respond to the educational needs of a diverse student body, and we appreciate the opportunity to share the impressive outcomes of this model program with public schools across New Jersey,” said Harry Lee, President and CEO of the New Jersey Public Charter Schools Association.

The New Jersey Department of Education launched the Lighthouse Award in 2017 to recognize the advancements made by New Jersey’s school districts and charter schools.

PCSST is a K-12 tuition-free, public charter school located in Paterson serving 1,656 total students, 85% of which come from economically disadvantaged households.
