PATERSON TO CELEBRATE HOMETOWN HERO DERRICK ETIENNE JR. AND HAITIAN CULTURE AT FREE WORLD CUP WATCH PARTY

Community invited to gather at historic Hinchliffe Stadium as Haiti takes on Brazil

Paterson, NJ — On Friday, June 19, 2026, the Andre Sayegh Civic Association's Passport To Paterson initiative will host a free World Cup Watch Party at historic Hinchliffe Stadium as Haiti faces Brazil in one of the most anticipated matches of the FIFA World Cup.
While the event will bring together soccer fans from across the region, the evening is about far more than the game itself. It is a celebration of Paterson's vibrant Haitian community and an opportunity to rally behind one of the city's own, Derrick Etienne Jr., who is representing Haiti on soccer's biggest stage.
Born and raised in Paterson, Etienne has become a source of pride for the entire city. His journey to the FIFA World Cup reflects perseverance, dedication, and the power of community. As Haiti returns to the World Cup for the first time since 1974, Paterson residents will come together to cheer for a hometown athlete whose success inspires the next generation of young players throughout the city.
Derrick Etienne Jr.'s achievement is part of a remarkable family legacy. His sister, Danielle Etienne, represented Haiti in the 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup. The Etiennes are believed to be the first brother-sister duo in the world to both qualify for FIFA World Cups, and both proudly hail from Paterson. The family's soccer tradition spans generations, with their grandfather, Derrick Etienne Sr., his twin brother, and several cousins all having represented Haiti internationally.
The evening will feature music, cultural entertainment, local vendors, and family-friendly activities before kickoff, transforming Hinchliffe Stadium into a celebration of Haitian heritage and the diversity that makes Paterson one of America's most multicultural cities.
The event is expected to draw elected officials, community leaders, and residents from across New Jersey, including Lieutenant Governor Dale Caldwell and Mayor Andre Sayegh. Serving as Master of Ceremonies for the evening will be Councilman Bergson Leneus of East Orange, one of New Jersey's Haitian-American elected officials. Their participation underscores the significance of the event not only for Paterson, but for communities throughout the state.
"Derrick Etienne Jr. represents the very best of Paterson," said Mayor Andre Sayegh. "His story reminds young people throughout our city that no dream is too big. This event is an opportunity to celebrate both a world-class athlete and the rich Haitian culture that continues to strengthen our community."
Residents are encouraged to bring blankets or folding chairs for field seating and enjoy an unforgettable evening of culture, community, and World Cup excitement.
