Pinkin Bill to Require International Student Exchange Programs to Register with NJ Secretary of State Passes Assembly

(TRENTON) – With the goal to ensure exchange students are provided a safe and secure environment while studying in New Jersey, the full Assembly on Monday approved legislation (A-1995) to require international student exchange visitor placement programs to register with the New Jersey Secretary of State. The measure was approved 72-2-0.

Currently, international student exchange programs are overseen at the federal level by the United States Department of State. This legislation would add another layer of oversight at the state level to ensure that students are protected by certain safety standards in regards to their housing needs.

Assemblywoman Nancy Pinkin (D-Middlesex), prime sponsor of the legislation, released the following statement:

“Study abroad programs give students a chance to immerse themselves in another culture and expand their understanding of the world. Their experience should be educational and meaningful, but above all it must be safe. Increasing oversight of student exchange programs at the state level will further ensure visitors have the best possible experience.”

The measure now goes to the Senate for further review.
