Piscataway Township Council to Move to Full Green Government Energy Use Tonight

March 23, 2021 – The Piscataway Township Council will take another big green step tonight as it votes to increase our Township government’s use of green energy from 25 percent to 100 percent all while also saving taxpayers more than tens of thousands of dollars.

“This is how a responsible government works to marshal renewable energy sources in a financially responsible way,” Mayor Brian C. Wahler said.  “Our natural resources will be conserved, our tax monies will be saved and our Township will further thrive as a greener community.”

Tonight’s contract up for a vote is for all facilities for which the Township government pays the electric bill such as our public works complex, police headquarters, Town Hall, libraries, community center and Little League fields.  The only exception is our street lighting which is under a separate contract and uses 50 percent renewable sources.

This morning the Township successfully conducted a public auction with a winning bid slated for EMEX, “…a technology-driven energy firm that facilitates the procurement of electricity and natural gas supply alongside innovative, cost-cutting energy solutions across North America.”  Under the measure that the Township Council is slated to approve tonight, the Township will have a two-year program beginning on July 1st that will result in all government use of energy to come from green sources at an estimated cost as more than $67,000 less than PSE&G tariff pricing.

“I am proud that Piscataway continues to lead the way on protecting our planet,” Council Vice President Michele Lombardi (Ward 4) said.  “Tonight we will again show residents that our Mayor and Township Council are responsible stewards of our wonderful environment as well as hard-earned tax dollars.”
