Progressive State Assembly Campaign Launches in NJ-17
RANKLIN, NJ—Progressive candidate for New Jersey Assembly Ron Rivers will be appearing
on Democratic Party primary ballots in the state’s 17th legislative district, after his candidate
petition was accepted by state officials.
Rivers is running a serious progressive campaign to represent five towns in Central New Jersey:
Franklin, Piscataway, New Brunswick, North Brunswick, and Milltown. His platform includes
defending reproductive rights, ending marijuana prohibition, and a massive new green energy
program that will combat the climate crisis and create good union jobs.
“I’m running because our communities deserve a full-time representative who will fight for them
in Trenton. Change is coming and it’s coming fast. We need someone who will be ahead of the
curve instead of behind the times,” said Rivers, a progressive reform Democrat who is running
for public office for the first time.
Rivers, a happily-married North Brunswick native, started a popular home-brewing supply
business in 2011 that he recently exited, using the proceeds to pay down his student debt. He is
also the founder of a non-profit focused on transparent and accessible local elections here in
New Jersey. Now, he is excited to mount a serious challenge to the entrenched nine-term
incumbent Joe Egan.
In stark contrast to Ron’s incumbent opponent, Rivers has committed to serve full-time in the
Assembly.
The campaign is off to a roaring start so far, with “listening tour” events booked in all five towns
in the district. The campaign team is also preparing for a grand opening celebration set for next
Thursday, April 25, at their new campaign headquarters in the Somerset section of Franklin.
