RALLY TO PROTECT OUR POST OFFICES HAPPENING IN FAIR LAWN THIS SATURDAY

(FAIR LAWN August 22) FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Local grassroots groups are rallying in Fair Lawn in support of the U.S. Postal Service and mail-in voting as the Trump administration seeks to undermine both. The rally will take place at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 22 on the sidewalk outside the U.S. Post Office at 14-24 Abbott Road.

“Since this country’s founding, the USPS has made an important promise to the American people: Anyone can send and receive mail to and from anyone else, at an affordable rate, whether you’re urban or rural. Americans rely on the USPS for everything from keeping in touch with family to receiving crucial, life-saving medications,” said Madeline Trimble, of Indivisible NJ 5th District, one of several groups co-sponsoring the event. “Now the post office is under threat from Donald Trump out of his petty, partisan concern that it might allow more people to vote safely and easily. We must protect this vital institution.”

“The U.S. Postal Service isn’t a business. It’s enshrined in the Constitution as an essential American institution, not just to preserve our country’s democracy, but also to support Americans daily. We must protect it,” added Anna Wong of Women for Progress.

Activists are urging members of Congress to fight back against the Trump administration’s efforts to impede timely mail delivery.

“We call on Rep. Josh Gottheimer to call for funding of the USPS and call out Trump’s attempt to compromise the election results and undermine their validity,” said Cathy Brienza of Ridgewood JOLT. “Funding of the USPS is necessary to make sure EVERY VOTE counts — and that should be of primary concern to every American. Any legitimate president of the United States would recognize that as part of his oath of office.”

“We will never remain silent while our democracy is threatened,” added Alice Gomstyn, of Glen Rock After the March. “During a pandemic, it is vital that the U.S. Postal Service is functioning with all the resources it needs to deliver mail-in ballots in time for voters to take part in elections. The recent USPS changes that have slowed down delivery would be disgraceful at any point in time, but are especially egregious now.”

Attendees are encouraged to bring signs and are required to wear masks and practice social distancing while showing their support of USPS and mail-in voting.

“There is nothing more urgent right now than preserving Americans’ access to vote,” said Jennifer Low Sauer, of Ramsey PINS. “Raise your voice with us and be heard!”
