BY REACHING OFFICIAL CENSUS COUNT OF NEARLY 160,000 RESIDENTS, PATERSON BECOMES A “FIRST CLASS CITY”

According to official 2020 United States Census results, Paterson’s population rose by 9% since the 2010 Census, amounting to a total of 159,732 residents.

PATERSON – Mayor Andre Sayegh, members of the City Council, and the Paterson Complete Count Committee will join to celebrate the City’s recent milestone of reaching a final Census count above 150,000 residents, yielding Paterson “First Class City” status in the State of New Jersey (N.J.S.A. 40A:6-4). Reaching this goal brings a new era of opportunity to the city, increasing autonomy and funding from formulaic grants and financial aid programs that are calculated based on population. Recognizing the importance of the 2020 Census count on Paterson’s long-term financial trajectory, the Sayegh Administration established the Paterson Complete Count Committee shortly after taking office in 2018. That committee invested in robust outreach initiatives by community leaders from various backgrounds, including education, healthcare, faith-based groups, nonprofits, and the public and private sectors. This celebratory event invites community members, youth, leaders, and volunteers to come enjoy light refreshments, remarks from leadership, and a viewing of the City’s official 2020 Census video.
