Rep. Payne, Jr. Secures $1.1 Billion for New Jersey to Repair Bridges Statewide

Washington, D.C. — Rep. Donald M. Payne, Jr., Chairman of the Subcommittee on Railroads, Pipelines, and Hazardous Materials for the House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure, announced today that New Jersey will receive $1.1 billion during the next five years to repair bridges statewide from the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA).  Rep. Payne, Jr. helped secure these funds for the state because he introduced the initial infrastructure bill, the INVEST in America Act, that the U.S. Senate amended to become the IIJA.  Rep. Payne, Jr.’s bill included funding for bridge repair nationwide.

“I am proud to help New Jersey and our district receive this critical funding to repair our bridges,” said Rep. Donald M. Payne, Jr.  “This money is extremely important to my district.  There are bridges in Hudson County that were built 80 and 90 years ago and represent a serious danger to travelers.  In addition, there are other bridges on Interstate 495 that should be fixed now.  This work is part of my commitment to get the federal resources necessary to help all of my constituents.”

The 10th Congressional District has 1,105 bridges and more than 80 percent of them need immediate or gradual repairs, according to the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Federal Highway Administration.  The new $1.2 trillion infrastructure law will repair and modernize America’s transportation systems, from roads and bridges to rail and airports.  Overall, New Jersey has 502 bridges that are rated in poor condition and need to be fixed or replaced immediately.  President Biden signed the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act into law on November 15, 2021.
