Rep. Payne, Jr. Votes to Strip Controversial Republican Rep. Greene of her Committee Assignments
Washington, D.C. — Congressman Donald M. Payne, Jr. voted today to remove conspiracy-peddling Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene from her committee assignments in the U.S. House of Representatives. The Republican from Georgia’s 14th District has been a lightning rod of controversy since she became a member of Congress for her statements that 1) House Speaker Nancy Pelosi should be shot, 2) the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001 did not happen, 3) the shooting at a Parkland, FL high school that killed 17 people was staged, and 4) “Jewish space lasers” caused the California wildfires.
“The Georgia Representative’s grip on reality should concern everyone in Congress and her home state,” said Congressman Donald M. Payne, Jr. “It is unfortunate that her belief in such outlandish and dangerous conspiracies has any support in the modern Republican party. For a member of Congress to claim that the Parkland tragedy is fake and then be put on the House Education and Labor Committee is outrageous. It is a slap in the face to all the families who lost children and loved ones during that horrible day. I want those families to know that the entire Democratic Caucus supports them and we are working to make sure such incidents do not happen again. It seems fitting that we would take this action during National Gun Violence Survivors Week.”
The vote on the House Resolution (H. Res. 72) to strip Rep. Greene of her assignments came a day after House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy failed to strip Rep. Greene from her committee assignments for her beliefs. If he had done so, it would have been a strong condemnation of her beliefs and shown his Republican House members that such false and destructive statements are not tolerated in the modern Republican party. Instead, members cheered Rep. Greene for her attempts to be contrite and claim she did not believe any of her previous statements anymore. Her claims have not been supported by any of the comments she has made when pressed to reject her earlier statements.
