Rep. Sherrill Reintroduces Resolution to Support Designating June 12th “Women Veterans Appreciation Day”
Washington, DC –– Today, Representative Mikie Sherrill (NJ-11) reintroduced a resolution which supports designating June 12th as “Women Veterans Appreciation Day” to recognize the service and sacrifices of women in uniform and bring attention to the unique needs of women veterans. Senator Cory Booker (D-NJ) reintroduced the companion resolution in the Senate.
“Women have served our nation alongside their male counterparts to uphold our democratic values from the American Revolution to the War in Afghanistan,” said Rep. Sherrill. “Yet, still today, female veterans face unique challenges in receiving the healthcare, support, and recognition they deserve. Too often, their contributions to our country and to our military are erased or ignored. In 2019, New Jersey designated June 12th ‘Women Veterans Appreciation Day’ as a statement of solidarity and to honor our women in uniform. It is time our country follows the Garden State’s lead and designates this a national day of appreciation.”
The day June 12th is designated because on June 12, 1948, President Harry S. Truman signed the Women’s Armed Services Integration Act, allowing women to serve as regular, permanent members of the military. Rep. Sherrill is the Vice Chair of the Servicewomen and Women Veterans Caucus, which brings together a group of women veteran members of Congress to address issues facing America’s servicewomen and women veterans. She first introduced this resolution in June of 2019 and again in 2020 alongside Senator Cory Booker, who introduced the 2020 companion resolution in the Senate.
