Rep. Van Drew, House Judiciary Committee Subpoena Sherrill Administration Over Thousands of Noncitizens Registered to Vote

Washington, DC - Today, Congressman Van Drew, Chairman of the House Judiciary Subcommittee on Oversight, announced that the Committee on the Judiciary and the Committee on House Administration have issued a subpoena to Governor Mikie Sherrill's administration after nearly three months of efforts to obtain answers about the improper registration of approximately 6,600 noncitizens on New Jersey's voter rolls, hundreds of whom went on to cast ballots.

"We have given Governor Sherrill's administration every opportunity to provide answers, and they have failed to do so," said Congressman Van Drew. "Thousands of people told the state they were not American citizens, yet they were registered to vote anyway. Hundreds actually voted. The state knew about this failure in 2024, and somehow these registrations remained on the rolls for nearly two years. We started with letters, we asked straightforward questions, and we pursued congressional oversight. Instead of getting answers, we got political attacks and a handful of documents that explain next to nothing. If it was simply a software glitch, then show us the evidence. Who knew about it? Why wasn't it fixed sooner? And what about people who may have falsely claimed to be citizens and were never independently verified?

"I want to thank Chairman Jim Jordan, Chairman Bryan Steil, and Chairwoman Laurel Lee for working with me to take this important next step. We did not blame Governor Sherrill for a failure that began under the Murphy administration, but she is responsible for providing answers now."

The subpoena requires Acting Secretary of State Shirley Emehelu to produce records by November 16, 2026, including documents concerning the software failure, citizenship verification safeguards, communications with the state's technology vendor, and efforts to remove improperly registered voters.
