WASHINGTON, DC – Today, Congressman Andy Kim (NJ-03), Congressman Anthony Brown (MD-04) and Congressman Albio Sires (NJ-08) released a letter signed by 45 members of color to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell expressing their support for President-elect Biden’s choice for Secretary of Defense, Secretary-designee Lloyd Austin.

The letter, which can be found here, states that, “As Black, Hispanic, Asian and Pacific Islander American Members of Congress, we are writing to express our strong support for Secretary-designate Lloyd Austin, who has been named by President-elect Biden as his nominee for Secretary of Defense, and the necessary congressional waiver.”

The members go on to highlight the fact that Secretary-designate Austin is, “the first Black nominee for Secretary of Defense,” and that his nomination, “would not only break historic barriers, but send an important signal to our country and the rest of the world about the value of diversity, inclusion, sacrifice and strength.”

The letter directly asks Speaker Pelosi and Leader McConnell to move Secretary-designate Austin’s, “nomination and the necessary congressional waiver forward quickly in the 117th Congress” after hearings are conducted in both chambers.
