Rev. Dr. Marques-Aquil Lewis for Essex County: 'My Commitment has Never Wavered.'

Rev. Dr. Marques-Aquil Lewis finished 6th in a highly competitive field in the race for Essex County Commissioner. Despite the crowded field, Lewis remains committed to the race, vowing to bring new energy, transparency, and accountability to county government.

“This race isn’t about race or gender, it’s about leadership,” said Rev. Dr. Lewis. “We need a Board of Commissioners that works alongside the County Executive, not as seat warmers, but as active partners bringing transparency, equality, and fairness to every municipality across Essex County. I’ve been doing this work since I was 16 years old, and 22 years later, my commitment has never wavered.”

The Lewis campaign continues to build strong momentum, backed by Mayor Ras Baraka, members of the Newark Municipal Council, educators, elected officials, and grassroots organizations throughout the county. Lewis is no stranger to overcoming the odds. In 2009, he challenged the political establishment in Newark and made history by becoming the youngest elected School Board member at just 21 years old.

Over nine years of service, he earned distinctions including Certified Master Board Member and Certified Board Leader, while helping guide critical decisions impacting Newark’s students and families. Now, Lewis is focused on earning the trust and support of residents across Essex County as he continues his campaign. To volunteer or get involved, please contact:
