Rep. Norcross’ office to urge him to cosponsor Medicare for All Act

CHERRY HILL, NJ — Together with local activists and other local progressive organizations, Our Revolution New Jersey will hold a rally at 1 p.m. (ET) Friday outside the office of U.S. Rep. Donald Norcross, to urge him to co-sponsor the Medicare for All Act of 2021 — which was introduced last week in the House of Representatives by Reps. Debbie Dingell (D-MI) and Pramila Jayapal (D-WA).

Friday’s rally is cosponsored by Our Revolution New Jersey, Our Revolution Gloucester County, New Jersey Working Families Alliance, South Jersey Progressive Democrats, South Jersey DSA and Cooper River Indivisible.

“The pandemic exposed employer-sponsored health insurance as an embarrassing failure,” said Mario DeSantis with Our Revolution Gloucester County. “Any healthcare reform that does not permanently guarantee healthcare as a human right is inadequate. Medicare for All means rectifying the healthcare inequities that existed long before the pandemic.”

“Donald Norcross has been signaling support for Medicare for All on social media but tweets and Facebook posts will not make this important piece of legislation a reality,”  said Kate Delany, president of South Jersey Progressive Democrats. “As a voter in CD 1, I want to see Congressman Norcross co-sponsor Medicare for All. Medical concerns have been a central focus of my life for all of my life as the older sister of a Cystic Fibrosis (CF) patient. On average CFers live a decade longer in Canada compared to their US life expectancy and access to universal healthcare plays a role in that outcome. Healthcare is a human right. I look forward to Congressman Norcross taking a firm stand and co-sponsoring this bill.”

“We urge Rep Norcross to join the other members of NJ’s delegation who support Medicare for All, “added Sue Altman, Executive director of the New Jersey Working Families Alliance.  “Healthcare should not be a vector for profits for insurers, insurance brokers and hospitals. We hope Rep Norcross will join us in the belief that healthcare is a human right, period. We expect more from a member of congress who is in the Progressive caucus.”

The Medicare for All Act of 2021 will improve and expand the existing Medicare program to give guaranteed healthcare to every person living in the United States. It will ensure that all comprehensive health services are covered and will eliminate out of pocket costs while ensuring that every patient has the freedom to choose their doctors, hospitals and other providers. In addition, the bill emphasizes achieving health equity.
