TOMS RIVER, NJ – June 15, 2020 – NJ.com reported yesterday that Kate Gibbs is under investigation by the Federal Election Commission for campaign finance violations, continuing what has been a troubling pattern of lawlessness throughout her adult life.
As NJ.com reported, “a $25,000 donation from Local 825’s state PAC to the New Jersey Republican State Committee…gave Gibbs a chance to address party activists at the state GOP’s March leadership summit in Atlantic City, where she said: ‘I am the only candidate in CD3 that can win, take this seat back and give the House back to Republican control.’”
“It also apparently exceeded the…federal limit on campaign contributions,” the NJ.com article concluded.
According to Paul Seamus Ryan, vice president for policy and litigation at Common Cause, a nonpartisan grassroots organization dedicated to upholding the core values of American democracy, “Federal campaign finance law defines ‘contribution’ to include anything of value given to a candidate for the purpose of influencing an election. This speaking spot at a party event, where the candidate spoke about her candidacy, was clearly a ‘thing of value’ to the Gibbs campaign.”
NJ.com also reported that former FEC General Counsel Larry Noble, after reviewing the information surrounding the contribution, concluded, “I have a hard time seeing how it’s legal.”
David Richter, Gibbs’ opponent in the Third Congressional District Republican primary, said, “Our campaign filed the complaint with the FEC after learning of the circumstances around Kate’s speech at the NJGOP Leadership Summit. Gibbs is employed by an affiliate of Local 825. The union’s donation that purchased a speaking slot for Kate to promote her campaign not only exceeded campaign contribution limits but she also failed to report it as a contribution.”
“Kate and her team can try and deflect all they want, but multiple independent sources have now confirmed what our campaign has found, that Kate Gibbs continues to show no respect for obeying the law. I wish I could say I’m surprised, but this has become par for the course for a candidate with a long history of ignoring the law when it is inconvenient to her. The law-abiding citizens of the Third District deserve better from their next representative in Congress,” Richter added.
