DIABETES CENTER MOVES TO NEWLY RENOVATED SPACE
SOMERVILLE, NJ, Feb. 3, 2022 – Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital (RWJUH) Somerset, an RWJBarnabas Health facility, has moved its Diabetes Center to newly renovated space just off the hospital’s main lobby. The modern center features amenities such as telehealth capabilities and smart televisions which patients can use to view supportive visual information.
RWJUH Somerset’s Diabetes Center helps patients manage their diabetes through one-on-one educational counseling, blood glucose monitoring, meal planning and nutritional counseling, exercise planning and insulin pump therapy. A gestational diabetes program is offered for those with diabetes only during pregnancy. All education is individualized, empowering patients to become mindful in their food and activity choices to promote better chronic disease management.
The multidisciplinary team at the Diabetes Center comprises an advising board-certified endocrinologist, a clinical nurse specialist, an advanced practice nurse educator, certified diabetes nurse educators, registered dietitians and certified diabetes educators.
“Our goal is to help individuals with diabetes live healthy, active lives,” said Amy Walsh, RD, program coordinator of the Diabetes Center. “We work with each patient to develop a customized plan to adopt a healthier lifestyle that incorporates diet modifications and exercise. If not managed, diabetes can lead to serious health problems, including high blood pressure, heart disease, chronic kidney disease, vision loss and neuropathy.”
Established in 1996, the Diabetes Center has been awarded the American Diabetes Association’s Education Recognition Certificate for continuing to meet national standards for quality diabetes self-management education.
U.S. News & World Report has recognized RWJUH Somerset as “high performing” in the care of patients with diabetes. The American Heart Association/American Stroke Association has also honored the hospital with its Get with the Guidelines Target: Type 2 Diabetes Honor Roll Award.
RWJUH Somerset’s Diabetes Center is open Monday through Friday with evening and Saturday appointments available. Most major insurances are accepted. For more information, call 908-685-2846 or go to www.rwjbh.org/somerset.
