Rooney calls on Murphy to extend county and municipal budget deadlines
WAYNE, N.J. – Assemblyman Kevin Rooney is calling on Gov. Phil Murphy to direct the Dept. of Community Affairs to extend budget deadlines for local government. While the state has extended its own budget deadline, it has not permitted the same extension for counties and municipalities.

“Local governments are under the same fiscal stress as the state,” said Rooney (R-Bergen). “Every measure that is necessary for New Jersey to remain fiscally responsible is necessary for counties and municipalities. His administration has been given the power to act, and now is the time.”

The legislature unanimously passed a bill (A3851) that Murphy signed on March 20 allowing the Director of the Division of Local Government Services to extend county and municipal budget deadlines without approval of the Local Finance Board during times of emergency.

No action has been taken to extend the budget deadlines for local governments despite an extension for state government.
