Ruiz Praises Nomination of Miguel Cardona as U.S. Secretary of Education
Trenton – Senate Education Chair M. Teresa Ruiz issued the following statement praising President-elect Joe Biden’s nomination of Connecticut Commissioner of Education Dr. Miguel Cardona as the Secretary of Education:
“With each nomination, the anticipation and expectations of the Biden Administration continue to grow. Thus far he has made thoughtful selections that represent what our country needs to move forward. They are professionals steeped in their subject matter, representing the diversity of our communities and bringing to the table the expertise needed to guide us through these tumultuous times. Dr. Miguel Cardona is no different.
“He is a Puerto Rican educator with hands-on knowledge and on the ground experience in our education system. His scope of work has been clearly aligned with my legislative priorities, including efforts to implement diverse curriculum, improve teacher diversity, close the achievement gap and ensure annual assessments to gauge learning loss. His response to the COVID-19 pandemic mirrors what I had called for here in New Jersey and I am incredibly impressed with his ability to close the digital divide in Connecticut. I look forward to his leadership in the U.S. Department of Education and I am confident his guidance will be integral to the success of our students as we emerge from this pandemic.”
