Carolyn Rush (Democratic candidate for NJ CD-02) was the featured speaker at a Q&A Listening Event held in Northfield, NJ. While the event had originally been billed as a debate between both Democratic candidates in CD2, Tim Alexander declined to participate claiming he was already the Democratic Party’s “nominee.” The Primary election that will determine the Democratic candidate who will face incumbent Jeff Van Drew (R) is set for June 7, 2022.

Most of the Q&A session focused on the impacts to society expected by the likely undoing of the legal precedent of Row by the Supreme Court  and removing a Constitutional Right for the first time in American history.

I hope the revelation of Alito’s opinion serves as a catalyst for millions to join the fight against the Republican’s assault on women’s rights.” Rush said. “I was really inspired by attending the 2017 Women’s March.” Polling clearly shows that over 70% of all Americans – Republicans and Democrats alike – oppose a federal ban on abortion care.

“The audacity of Alito’s language clarifies the fact that we are slipping toward minority rule – and that should terrify everyone – liberals and conservatives alike.” Rush said.

The vote by the Senate on the Women’s Health Protection Act failed earlier today,” Rush said “but I think accommodations can be made to codify the core protections of Roe. We must ensure the privacy rights we’ve enjoyed for 50 years will remain for future generations of American women. It requires working across the aisle.

A coalition of progressive and reproductive rights groups announced plans to hold a “Bans Off Our Bodies” day of action this Saturday – May 14th, 2022 – in cities nation-wide to push back against the ruling laid out in the high court’s draft opinion.  The day of action will include four “anchor” marches in New York, Chicago, Washington, D.C., and Los Angeles and hundreds of demonstrations in other cities.

Get involved! Donate to organizations that help women, reach out to our NJ Senators to encourage support of a compromise bill, support Democratic Candidates in swing states to ensure Democrats keep the House and Senate. Find a local march, make a sign and lend your voice,” Rush said when asked during closing remarks about next steps. “I wish Tim would’ve joined us tonight,” Rush said.  “I think the voters of the 2nd District have two good Democratic Congressional candidates from which to choose. I just happen to be the best choice! “ she added.
