Sens. Menendez, Booker Joint Statement on the Three-Year Anniversary of Murder of Daniel Anderl, Son of U.S. District Court Judge Esther Salas
WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senators Bob Menendez and Cory Booker (both D-N.J.) issued the following statement marking the anniversary of the senseless murder of Daniel Anderl, the son of U.S. District Judge Esther Salas:
“Three years ago today, U.S. District Court Judge Esther Salas experienced what no parent should ever have to – the sudden loss of her precious 20-year old son, Daniel Anderl. An armed attacker targeting Judge Salas came to her home, murdered her son, Daniel, and critically injured her husband, Mark. Our hearts go out to Judge Salas and Mark on the anniversary of their son’s death, a tragedy forever seared into our collective memory.
“What happened after Daniel’s murder was nothing short of inspiring. Judge Salas turned her unspeakable pain into purpose and launched a campaign to increase security and privacy protections for judges and their families across the country. Her relentless advocacy culminated in the Daniel Anderl Judicial Security and Privacy Act, which we crafted and championed in Congress. When we successfully enacted the Daniel Anderl Judicial Security and Privacy Act last year, it was one of the proudest moments of our careers. In honor of Daniel, we were able to pass a law to help ensure that no other judges – who dedicate their lives to serving the public – go through what Judge Salas endured.
“We will continue to champion the cause of protecting our judges and ensuring they can continue to faithfully execute their duties and work to deliver equal justice under the law.”
