Sherrill Calls on VA Secretary Wilkie to Resign
Parsippany, NJ — Representative Mikie Sherrill (NJ-11) today called on Secretary of Veterans Affairs Robert Wilkie to resign following the recent report from Department of Veterans Affairs Office of Inspector General detailing the Secretary’s attempts to smear a woman veteran who reported a sexual assault at a VA facility:
“One of the very first things I did when I got to Congress was write to Secretary Wilkie, urging him to take immediate action to ensure VA medical facilities equitably serve women veterans and to address the reports of sexual harassment at the VA. After two years of work to raise the level of care women veterans receive, the Inspector General’s report and the Secretary’s behavior are extremely disturbing. The Secretary of the VA is responsible for the veterans in his care, and they should be his first concern — not his own political wellbeing. Secretary Wilkie should resign immediately.”
Rep. Sherrill is a Navy veteran and member of the House Armed Services Committee. In March 2019, she led a bipartisan group of Members of Congress calling on Secretary Wilkie to implement specific measures to track and prioritize both the cultural and physical transformation within Department of Veterans Affairs medical facilities to equitably serve women veterans.
