Sherrill Questions Witnesses on Protecting New Jersey’s Innovation from Unfair CCP Interference

Washington, DC — Yesterday evening, Congresswoman Mikie Sherrill (NJ-11) questioned technology and national security experts on how the United States can best lead in and support the emerging technologies — like artificial intelligence, semiconductors, and quantum computing — that will define American competitiveness for the coming decades. Rep. Sherrill represents a wide range of high-end manufacturing and innovation-driving companies in New Jersey’s 11th Congressional District. This hearing was held by the House Select Committee on the Strategic Competition Between the United States and the Chinese Communist Party (CCP).

“I am proud that my district and New Jersey as a whole are home to some of the most innovative private-sector firms and public institutions in the nation, which are conducting cutting-edge research in key sectors affecting the lives of Americans. However, it is apparent now that this innovation in NJ-11 and throughout the country is at risk because of the targeted, purposeful plans of the CCP,” said Rep. Sherrill. “Last night’s hearing revealed valuable insights into how we can spur private sector innovation in emerging tech, such as AI and quantum, and hold the CCP accountable for its unfair economic practices.”

The witnesses at the hearing included:

  • Lindsay Gorman, Senior Fellow for Emerging Tech at the German Marshall Fund;
  • William Evanina, CEO of the Evanina Group; and
  • Josh Wolfe, Co-founder & Managing Partner at Lux Capital.
