Small Administration to Host Fan Distribution Event for Atlantic City Seniors August 10-11

(ATLANTIC CITY) – To help senior citizens safely beat the heat this summer, the Small Administration, through the Atlantic City Department of Senior Services, will host a fan distribution event August 10-11, 2021.

“Extreme heat season is here and it can be especially dangerous for seniors,” said Mayor Marty Small, Sr. “This fan distribution event is one way we can make sure our seniors are comfortable, prepared, and safe this summer.”

Over 200 fans have been purchased through funding awarded by the Community Development Block Grant. The Department of Senior Services worked with managers at senior facilities, to identify residents in need. Fans will be provided to them at the various senior facilities and buildings.

“We have many seniors in Atlantic City without access to air conditioning,” said Brian Gunter, Supervisor of Senior Services for the City of Atlantic City. “This is a great first step in providing seniors with safe ways to stay cool and beat the heat.”

The Atlantic City Department of Health and Office of Emergency Management (OEM) recommend the following actions for all residents to stay safe in the heat:

  • Drink plenty of water and avoid drinks with caffeine or alcohol.
  • If outdoors for an extended period of time, take breaks in the shade or air conditioning.
  • Wear light-colored, lightweight and loose-fitting clothing.
  • Where possible, reduce physical activity or reschedule it for cooler times of the day.
  • Apply sunscreen to all exposed skin when in the sun and wear a hat or head covering.
  • If you do not have air conditioning, take advantage of libraries, malls, schools, or other publicly accessible buildings during the day.
