Statement by Rep. Mikie Sherrill on the Northern District of Texas

“Chief Judge Godbey’s letter further demonstrates why Congress urgently needs to pass my legislation to end the harmful practice of ‘judge shopping.’ We cannot allow anti-abortion extremists to cherry-pick an outcome through this dangerous and partisan practice. The Judicial Conference’s new policy to curtail this loophole was a welcomed step but we must put federal protections in place because we know MAGA Republicans will stop at nothing to restrict reproductive health care.”

In the wake of the Alliance for Hippocratic Medicine v. FDA decision in Texas in April of 2023, Rep. Sherrill introduced the End Judge Shopping Act of 2023. This legislation would prevent civil suits seeking rulings that would impact Americans nationwide from being heard by single-judge divisions of U.S. District Courts.
