Statement from Assemblywoman Annette Chaparro (D-33)

While my work is far from over, I wanted to thank the voters of the 33rd District for entrusting me to be their voice in Trenton for what will be eight years of service to the people of Hoboken, Jersey City, Union City, and Weehawken.

As announcements regarding the political future of my seat were made, I wanted to let everyone know that I am committed to a hard-working 2023 and will still help my community in any capacity I can going forward.

I believe I have brought a unique perspective to this seat as a single mom from humble beginnings, born and raised in the Hoboken Housing Authority. While I’m unsure what my political future has in store, I’ve seen the ups and downs for so many people in New Jersey throughout my life, and I know that with a little help from those around us, we can all lift each other together.

I look forward to helping ensure a smooth transition to the new members of the Legislature. I said from the start that I thought it was important to have a Latina on the ticket representing Hudson County, as Hispanic people make up more than 40% of the population in our county. I’m glad to see a Latina will be replacing Asm. Mukherji’s seat. I believe that representation is paramount to a functioning democracy, and I hope to see our Legislature continue to mirror the people it serves.

I’ve been happy to be a partner with all the mayors in my District, especially Mayor Dawn Zimmer, who encouraged me to seek this position. It has been the blessing of a lifetime to serve my community.

I also want to thank Senator Brian Stack, who I learned so much from. He is a hardworking man who keeps his word, and he does so much to help the people who are hurting in Hudson County. It’s been a pleasure to work with Sen. Stack alongside Asm. Raj Mukherji.

My work isn’t done in the Assembly, and it won’t be done when my term ends. I still want to be a voice for all the people who need help in my community. But as plans for the future are announced, I wanted to simply say a big THANK YOU to everyone who has supported me on this journey.

Annette Chaparro
