STATEMENT FROM MAYOR TED R. GREEN ON THE PASSING OF FORMER NEWARK MAYOR SHARPE JAMES

"Today, we remember a giant.
Mayor Sharpe James was a force. He was unapologetic, unrelenting, and undeniably committed to the people of Newark. His passing marks the end of an era, but his impact will be remembered for generations to come. He was 89.
For two decades, Sharpe James stood at the helm of New Jersey’s largest city with a vision that was bold and a heart that beat for his community. He emerged from the struggle, shaped by civil rights movements and urban rebellions, and never backed down from a fight for political power, neighborhood empowerment, or Newark’s place at the table. Whether you loved him or challenged him, you had to respect and admire his drive, his presence, and his results.
His story, rising from the son of a single mother who fled the Jim Crow South, to educator, councilman, five-term mayor, state senator, and elder statesman, is one of purpose, strength, survival, and pride in self and city. He led Newark into a renaissance, bringing national attention and investment in Newark, changing the game for urban leadership, and inspiring a generation of young Black leaders to step up and serve — including myself.
On behalf of the residents of East Orange, I extend deepest condolences to The James Family and to the people of Newark. His legacy is not just in the records he set or the elections he won; it’s in the lives he touched, the battles he waged, and the city he helped re-define.
Rest in power, Mayor James. You were larger than life, and your indomitable spirit will never be duplicated or forgotten."
