TRENTON, NJ (July 26, 2021) Mayor Gwendolyn A. Faison was an active member of the New Jersey Federation of Democratic Women, Camden Chapter, and the National Federation of Democratic Women for many years. She served both organizations with eloquence and grace.
Mayor Faison was a trailblazer and political force who was honored and respected statewide. Born in Clinton, North Carolina, on February 14, 1925, Mayor Faison served for ten years as the first female mayor of Camden, New Jersey.
She embodied all the qualities of a good leader – accomplished, authentic, enthusiastic, considerate, and kind. Mayor Faison was a role model for the city of Camden while serving as mayor and on various committees and organizations.
Mayor Faison was honored by the New Jersey Conference of Mayors in 2014 for helping to shatter the glass ceiling for women, especially women of color. She was unafraid and unabashed, and her legacy will be remembered as a woman who always did what she thought was right for her community.
On behalf of the New Jersey Federation of Democratic Women, we honor Mayor Faison’s work and celebrate her achievements that benefited the people of New Jersey and the Democratic Party. We send our sincerest condolences to Mayor Faison’s family, friends, and colleagues
