The Board of Directors at University Hospital extends its congratulations to our President and CEO, Dr. Shereef Elnahal, on his nomination by President Biden as the Undersecretary for Health in the Veterans Health Administration at the United States Department of Veterans Affairs. He will help lead the team through a seamless transition as he navigates the Senate confirmation process.

As he transitions to his new national role, we thank him for his nearly three years at the helm of New Jersey’s only public hospital. We also express our deepest appreciation to Dr. Elnahal for guiding our entire University Hospital family through the COVID-19 pandemic. In just a few years, he has led the transformation of the Hospital into a role model for public health and service, the Hospital is now on a sure financial footing, and we continue to enhance operational efficiencies across the entire institution.

Under his guidance, University Hospital has built stronger links with our community and its leaders, services and care quality scores continue to improve, and we have made great strides towards realizing our full potential. We also express our appreciation to Dr. Elnahal for his guidance in helping our entire University Hospital family navigate the COVID-19 pandemic.

Dr. Elnahal leaves us with a visionary plan for the future and we are excited to build on our current success by continuing to revitalize the institution into a world-class medical facility. The Board will immediately begin a process to identify the next President and CEO. In the meantime, the Board is confident that the skilled Leadership Team at University Hospital will continue to move the Hospital forward.
