Ocean Township, Monmouth County: It was 1993, and Steve Clayton was a first-time football player as a Freshman. Steve was so nervous that he couldn’t get the pads in the proper places in his football pants. He wanted to quit, but one of his coaches gave precious advice to Steve, saying that if he quit before trying, he would often quit in life. Steve stayed in the program and has taken the advice throughout his adult life, and credits it for much of the success he has had.
The above story illustrates the power of the tight-knit and supportive community Ocean has always been. It empowers students to reach their highest potential, even if they don’t know what that potential is at the time. Led by caring and compassionate teachers working in collaboration with parents, Ocean is a special place for students to thrive while they are in Ocean and after they graduate.
Ocean has challenges ahead, notably state funding cuts, among other things. However, working together, the sky is the limit for the students and for the district itself. Steve Clayton is seeking a return to the School Board so the next generation of Spartans can have the same precious opportunities as he was given.
About Steve: Steve is a proud Ocean graduate who graduated from the University of Maryland-College Park and Carnegie Mellon University. He presently serves as Director of Development for a statewide nonprofit focused on ensuring that children can grow up safe, healthy, and educated. Steve is an avid runner, reader, and occasional trivia night participant.
