SWEENEY, SOUTH JERSEY DEMOCRATS SLAM TRUMP’S MEDICAID CUTS, OUTLINE BOLD PLAN TO PROTECT NEW JERSEY HEALTH CARE

Today in Camden, Steve Sweeney gathered with South Jersey Democrats, seniors, and health care workers for a press conference, calling out Trump and Congressional Republicans for pushing to massively cut programs, like Medicaid. The speakers talked about how the cuts would impact New Jerseyans, while promoting Steve’s bold Jersey Option plan — a public health insurance initiative designed to protect New Jerseyans’ health care coverage from federal cuts and lower costs

With more than 300,000 New Jerseyans at risk of losing their health care coverage as a result of federal funding cuts, Steve Sweeney is the only Democrat in the country with a substantive plan to not just defend New Jerseyans’ coverage, but expand it and lower prescription drugs costs for all New Jersey residents.

“Government has a role in this country, and it’s to help the poor; it’s to help the disabled; it’s to help the seniors … What Republicans are doing isn’t okay. We’ve got to be prepared for when it happens, because it’s happening. That’s why I proposed the Jersey Option, because it provides an opportunity for people to continue to have health insurance, especially when 380,000 New Jerseyans are going to lose it,” said Steve Sweeney. “We’ve got to stand up, and we’re the frontline of defense. This next election is going to speak volumes about what happens in the midterms. We’ve got to be ready to fight back, and I’m going to fight back as your next Governor.”

“Steve Sweeney comes from a working-class family, and has fought for working-class people his entire life – certainly in his career and as a union leader. He knows how this state works because he’s done it. He’s done the hard stuff… I know who he is and I support him and how he is going to respond to this nonsense coming out of Washington,” said Congressman Herb Conaway. “Everyone deserves an opportunity to live in safety and in health, and thrive. They’re against it, we’re for it, and we’re for Steve Sweeney.”

“Without federal support, states and counties must decide whether to continue funding [Medicaid] services, and reductions would result in higher Medicaid costs due to increased hospitalizations and nursing home placements,” said Maureen Bergeron, Director of Senior & Disability Services in Camden County. “Simply put, these cuts are going to put a lot of people at risk in New Jersey, and New Jersey’s next governor needs to be someone who is ready to act swiftly to protect those who need it most.”

“I’m on Medicaid, and right now, I’m really worried about being able to make ends meet. Unfortunately, Republicans just voted to take coverage away from me and so many other New Jerseyans. They promised they wouldn’t cut Medicaid, and then they turned around and did it anyway. I wouldn’t be able to get by without it; my medicine, my food – everything,” said Marie Beres, a New Jersey resident and Medicare recipient. “I’m supporting Steve Sweeney because I want someone I can trust to fight back. As governor, he’ll protect people like me, and if I do lose my coverage, his Jersey Option plan will keep me covered. The only thing New Jerseyans can do to make sure we don’t lose our health care coverage is by voting for Steve Sweeney.”
