The Associate Alumnae of Douglass College to Celebrate 100th Anniversary
Organization Celebrates Century of Contributions and Service to Douglass Community
NEW BRUNSWICK – Celebrating a century of contributions to the Douglass community, The Associate Alumnae of Douglass College (AADC) announced today the “100th Anniversary Proud History to Bright Future Gala” to be held on Saturday, June 11, 2022, from 6:00 pm to 11:00 pm, at the East Brunswick Hilton Hotel.
The celebration will feature a keynote address by Cheri Beasley ’88, former Chief Justice of the North Carolina Supreme Court and the first African American woman to lead the Court. All alumnae, friends and community partners are invited to attend this spectacular gala celebration featuring special guests, cocktails, dinner, dancing and more.
“The AADC was founded by the college’s first graduating class the same day they graduated in 1922. These first alumnae wanted to support the state’s first women’s college and remain engaged and connected to their alma mater throughout the years,” said Valerie L. Anderson ‘81, executive director of the AADC. “A century later, I know our founding sisters would be tremendously proud of all this organization has accomplished in supporting the Douglass community, her alumnae, and providing lifelong learning and connections.”
“It is my great pleasure to recognize the AADC on their 100th anniversary of engaging women in higher education,” said Tammy Murphy, First Lady of the State of New Jersey. “The AADC has had a tremendous impact on thousands of women by helping them both personally and professionally, and by providing an invaluable network as they reach their career goals. For 100 years, the AADC has exemplified ‘women supporting women’, and I wish them continued success in their next 100 years.”
“Douglass College and the AADC do so much to nurture young women and help them become leaders in their communities,” said Cheri Beasley ’88, former Chief Justice of the North Carolina Supreme Court. “In my own life, Douglass and the AADC were instrumental in helping me see my potential and I know I join so many women in feeling this way. We are all better for Douglass, AADC, and their tireless efforts to build strong women leaders.”
The Alumnae Association of Douglass College was formed 100 years ago on June 10, 1922, by the first graduating class of the New Jersey College for Women, now known as Douglass Residential College. For 95 years (through 2016), the AADC was the primary fundraiser for Douglass, running three highly successful capital campaigns in conjunction with the University. The Douglass Fund, collecting generous gifts by alumnae and other donors and administered by the AADC, has provided millions of dollars in support of scholarships, programs and prizes for thousands of Douglass women and continues to supply financial support. AADC currently runs a Fellowship Program to provide funding to women seeking graduate education in a variety of fields.
The AADC has fulfilled its Mission as an independent, self-supporting 501(c)(3) organization. The AADC develops and promotes connections among Douglass alumnae by providing programs, services, networks and lifelong learning opportunities that represent the interests and needs of our diverse alumnae. The AADC provides prudent stewardship of the Douglass Fund and other endowed funds held by the AADC for the benefit of Douglass; distributions from these funds contribute financial support to Douglass and her students.
