Treasury Assures Pascrell, Kelly that Taxpayer Data was Protected from Cyberbreach

Update comes one week after the Members urgently requested information from Treasury, IRS on attack

WASHINGTON, DC – U.S. Reps. Bill Pascrell, Jr. (D-NJ-09) and Mike Kelly (R-PA-16), the Chairman and Ranking Member of the House Ways and Means Subcommittee on Oversight, today received assurances from the Inspector General for Tax Administration (TIGTA) in the U.S. Treasury Department that taxpayer data was not compromised by the recent cyber-attack on the United States government. The response from TIGTA comes just five days after the Oversight Subcommittee heads made an urgent inquiry seeking to know if IRS systems were compromised by the breach.

“We are heartened that initial findings suggest that the recent cyber-attack on our government did not compromise taxpayer information lodged with the IRS,” said Reps. Pascrell and Kelly. “Americans should have confidence that their personal data is protected and secure. We continue to urge TIGTA, the IRS, and the Treasury to be as transparent as possible with the American public on any breaches that they might subsequently find as they continue their investigations.”

In addition to their letter to TIGTA, the Members also wrote to IRS Commissioner Charles Rettig requesting similar information under IRS jurisdiction.
