New Jersey – Today, Nancy Erika Smith Esq. of Montclair’s Smith Mullin issued the following statement upon the filing of an emergent appeal to the New Jersey State Appellate Division, asking the court to end the exemption for casinos from the Smoke Free Air Act.
“Casino workers represented by the UAW and C.E.A.S.E. filed an emergent appeal today asking the Appellate Division to protect their right to health and safety by ending the exemption for casinos from the Smoke Free Air Act, which protects all other workers in New Jersey from the toxic, and sometimes fatal, effects of working in secondhand smoke.
“The CDC advises that even 60 minutes in secondhand smoke damages the human body. That is evident to the many casino workers who have gotten cancer, lung disease, heart disease, asthma and COPD.
“It is past time to allow casinos the exclusive right to poison their workers for claimed profits. Smoke-free casinos around the country are profitable. What New Jersey casinos really want is to keep problem gamblers from taking a break to smoke, even though the law requires casinos to help addicted gamblers.
“This is not about jobs. The online gambling allowed by the State has poured money into the casinos’ coffers and cost jobs, while making the multi-millionaire casino bosses who work in smoke-free offices even richer.” – Nancy Erika Smith Esq. of Montclair’s Smith Mullin.
