UTCA STATEMENT ON MARYLAND ACCIDENT THAT CLAIMED THE LIVES OF SIX HIGHWAY WORKERS

Farmingdale – Utility and Transportation Contractors Association (UTCA) Executive Director Dave Rible released the following statement today on the recent Maryland accident in which six highway workers were killed when a car entered a work zone:

“Our thoughts and prayers are with our colleagues in Maryland as they mourn the loss of six lives in this tragic accident. This is a heartbreaking illustration of the dangers those who work in our industry face every day and this is why we will never stop fighting to make work zones safer for workers and motorists.

“There are an average of more than 700 fatalities in work zones every year and speeding and distracted driving are a contributing factor in many of these accidents. We are hopeful this tragedy will raise awareness of the issue of work zone safety and encourage drivers to slow down and be alert when traveling in or near work zones.

“The UTCA will continue to work with our members, industry partners and government officials to enact policies to promote work zone safety throughout the state.”
