Wainstein: Sacco’s Power Plant – Taking North Bergen Backwards
Sacco’s Power Plant – Taking North Bergen Backwards
Sacco still supports Power Plant that will receive 30-year tax abatement to service NYC
North Bergen, N.J. –North Bergen Mayor Nicholas Sacco remains steadfast in his support of building a power plant that will service New York City. Sacco also supports giving the out-of-state company a 30-year tax abatement. Sacco’s opponents in the upcoming election for North Bergen Mayor and Commissioner are calling on him to oppose the power plant.
“Sacco cares more about an out-of-state developer than our health,” Larry Wainstein said, “The health, safety, and welfare of residents should be his number one priority. It isn’t. Instead of finding ways to create cutting-edge clean energy, Sacco is the architect of a plan that takes North Bergen backwards.”
The Power Plant will increase air pollution and is also in an area that is at risk of flooding. If the area floods, it will cause hundreds-of-millions of dollars in damages that taxpayers will be on the hook to pay for through FEMA claims.
“Not only will the power plant increase our chances for disease and respiratory disorders, but it will also put us on the hook for a tremendous financial risk,” Commissioner candidate Franklin Fabre said, “It will also decrease property values for residents, while putting them on the hook for this burden. Meanwhile, the owners of the power plant will not even be paying their fair share, because Sacco is giving them a property tax abatement.”
The pollution will emit chemicals in the air that put residents at increased risk for cancer, heart disease, birth defects, and even premature death. Commissioner candidate Diana Ortiz expressed concerns for the well being of residents young and old.
“I have a young daughter and I am the caretaker for my elderly mother,” Ortiz said, “The pollution caused by the power plant creates extreme health risks for residents of all ages. We cannot allow this to be built. Sacco is putting corporate welfare before our safety. He represents North Bergen not New York City. It is time for him to stand up for what is best for our town.”
