Wayne NJ Democrats’ Statement on Board of Education Mission Change
Wayne NJ Democrats believe, in no uncertain terms, that diversity strengthens our schools and our community. The presence of students from different backgrounds, cultures, and lived experiences is something to celebrate - not sanitize.
It is with that principle in mind that we strongly condemn the Wayne Board of Education’s decision to replace the district’s mission statement.
The previous mission statement affirmed “the humanity and dignity of all learners,” committed the district to “equity and opportunity for all,” and recognized education as a human right requiring equitable access. It reflected the values of a modern public school system serving a diverse community.
The newly adopted statement removes any reference to equity, cultural responsiveness, or affirming the dignity of all students. What remains is a generic, watered-down description of educational excellence that omits the very principles that ensure every child feels seen, supported, and protected.
We must ask: why was this change necessary?
The timing raises serious concerns. Last year, the federal government issued a directive threatening funding for districts that maintained diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives. Now, that directive has been formally vacated following a federal court ruling, with the U.S. Department of Education conceding that it cannot enforce or revive it.
With that unlawful directive nullified, there is no justification for preemptively stripping equity language from our district’s foundational mission.
Wayne’s schools should not be governed by fear or political theater. They should be guided by a commitment to inclusion, academic rigor, and equal opportunity for every student.
We call on the Wayne Board of Education to explain its decision and to reconsider restoring a mission statement that clearly affirms the dignity and equity of all learners.
Our children deserve nothing less.
