Wimberly on the Federal Eviction Moratorium Expiring

(TRENTON) – Assemblyman Benjie Wimberly (D-Bergen, Passaic), chair of the Assembly Housing Committee, issued the following statement on the end of the federal eviction moratorium:

“Over this year and a half, we have seen New Jersey’s already evident housing crisis nearly implode due to job loss. With the end of the federal moratorium on eviction, millions of Americans are facing the very real possibility of homelessness.

“New Jersey is one of only a few states throughout the country that has enacted laws to extend protections for renters who are behind as a result of the economic impact of the coronavirus pandemic. We’ve taken the necessary steps to help residents stay in their homes and keep a roof over their heads. There’s help on the way for families who need it.

“The Department of Community Affairs website provides information for renters who are facing evictions: https://covid19.nj.gov/forms/renter. I look forward to continuing to work with my colleagues in the Legislature to address housing concerns and avoid evictions around the State. I also implore our congressional counterparts to work together to extend the federal eviction moratorium protection for renters.”
