Assemblyman Danielsen Slams $100 NJ Transit World Cup Surcharge

Governor Phil Murphy formally entered the Legislative District 17 race in support of Assemblymen Joe Egan and Joe Danielsen, a pair of incumbent Democrats.

Somerset, NJ - Last week, I called attention to my concerns regarding news that New York Penn Station would partially close to New Jersey Transit riders during World Cup matches; now that situation has gone from bad to worse. News that NJT is planning to charge $100 for a ticket from Penn Station to MetLife Stadium has rightfully shocked the senses of this State. Usually, a ticket for that trip would be $12.90; this proposed hike would be a nearly 800% increase, which is absolutely unconscionable.

As I have said consistently, all eyes will be on New Jersey for this World Cup, with fans and heads of state and government from around the world being in attendance. And to be blunt, New Jersey Transit is failing to meet the moment before the first matches are even played. As we speak, the Governor of New York has called out NJT for this price hike, contrasting it with the MTA, all while news stories circulate across the nation and world reporting on this.

I am pleased that Governor Sherrill has spoken out in opposition to these price hikes, but we need concrete guarantees from New Jersey Transit and its leadership that they will not seek to squeeze the fans who have already spent considerable amounts of money on flights to the United States, accommodation, and match tickets. The last thing we need is these fans' impression of our State being marred by this unnecessary and unfair hike. NJT needs to do the right thing and refocus its efforts on creating a safe and affordable experience that allows fans to get to the matches safely, without compromising usage by commuters who depend on its services.
