Brennan and Bhalla Applaud Decision to Pull Comptroller Bill
"When we speak out, we can really make a difference."
Jersey City/Hoboken — Assemblymembers-elect Katie Brennan and Mayor Ravi Bhalla released the following statements celebrating the withdrawal of legislation (S4924) that would have taken away investigatory powers from the New Jersey State Comptroller.
"This shows that when we speak out, we can really make a difference. I want to thank the Senate President for hearing everyone's concerns and pulling the bill. This is democracy at work," said Assemblyman-elect Ravi Bhalla, who testified against the bill last week.
"This is a win for good government and a win for the people of New Jersey. If you testified, called your representatives, and made your voice heard, you made this happen," said Assemblywoman-elect Katie Brennan. "Pulling this bill was the right decision. We need more independent oversight in New Jersey, not less."
The proposal faced significant opposition from U.S. Senator Andy Kim, New Jersey Attorney General Matt Platkin, Comptroller Kevin Walsh, and dozens of advocates and residents who testified against the bill at a state Senate hearing last week. Brennan and Bhalla came out against the bill shortly after it was introduced, calling on residents to speak out against it.
The 32nd legislative district includes Hoboken and most of Jersey City.
