RT. 208 Walkway Bridge, 127 Ethel Avenue, Hawthorne, NJ
Hawthorne, NJ — Building on the strong turnout and heartfelt generosity shown at the Thanksgiving Visibility Brigade and Food Drive on November 22, Hawthorne’s Indivisible’s The Resistance Alliance, led by Christine Rea-Briskin, and Wayne Indivisible, led by Dianne Douthat, will host an Encore Holiday Season “NO ONE SHOULD GO HUNGRY” Visibility Brigade and Food Drive on Sunday, December 14, from 11 AM to 2 PM at the RT. 208 Walkway Bridge, 127 Ethel Avenue in Hawthorne.
This action continues the groups’ work to support local families facing increased hardship as essential nutrition programs remain unstable nationwide. All donations collected will go directly to St. Anthony’s food bank in Hawthorne, where they will immediately help neighbors struggling with food insecurity during the holiday season.
Why combine a Visibility Brigade with a Food Drive?
Organizers emphasize that the event is designed both to meet urgent local needs and to raise awareness about the broader policy decisions contributing to rising hunger. Visibility volunteers will hold signs reminding passersby that hunger should never be considered normal or inevitable, while the food drive offers a tangible way to help families right now.
Quote from Christine Rea-Briskin
“The purpose of the Visibility Brigade is to gently remind our community that what’s happening at the federal level isn’t normal. Many caring people simply don’t realize how policy choices—especially cuts to nutrition programs—are affecting families right here at home. Our goal isn’t to point fingers but to encourage awareness and compassion.
As people drive by on their way to church, errands, or holiday shopping, we hope they’re reminded that most Americans are generous of spirit. This season calls us to look out for one another. Whether someone wants to stand with us on the bridge or can spare a bag of groceries, we’re grateful for every act of support.”
Donations Needed
Community members are asked to bring food or essential household items to support neighbors who are hungry, underserved, or struggling due to reduced benefits.
Most-needed items include:
• Non-perishable food (no glass containers)
• Paper goods, tin foil, cling wrap
• Laundry and dish detergent
• Soap, body wash, shampoo, conditioner
• Toothpaste
During the November action, donations supported Martha’s Pantry at St. Clements Church. This month, the focus shifts to St. Anthony’s food bank, where shelves need replenishing as winter sets in.
Visibility Brigade — Weather Permitting
Volunteers will once again stand on the walkway bridge with “NO ONE SHOULD GO HUNGRY” messages to raise awareness about ongoing threats to nutrition and healthcare programs. Food collection will continue as long as weather conditions remain safe; in the case of serious inclement weather, the donation component may be scaled back, but volunteers remain committed to the mission.
The community is encouraged to:
• Donate food and essential household items
• Join the Visibility Brigade in solidarity
• Help raise awareness that hunger and deprivation must never be normalized
Join us on December 14 to support St. Anthony’s food bank, uplift our neighbors, and affirm a simple truth: No one should go hungry.
