Mourning the Passing of Gil Lugossy

I was deeply saddened this morning to learn of the passing of Gil Lugossy. Growing up, Gil was a neighbor of ours in the Broad Street Park neighborhood of Hamilton. I'd talk with him sometimes while out on my paper route; I learned that we shared a passion for local history, and I always looked forward to an opportunity to hear his stories. Later, when I ran for office, I turned to Gil often for his advice and his perspective. He was always generous with his time, and I know I'm just one of many leaders across Mercer County who was fortunate enough to count Gil both as a mentor and a role model. His impressive record of public service included serving on the Hamilton School Board, two terms as Mercer County Freeholder (now Commissioner), five terms as Mercer County Sheriff, and nearly a decade on the State Parole Board, but for Gil these titles were always a means to an end. His true passion was helping people, and over his long life he touched so many lives in Mercer County and beyond. Gil will be deeply missed, and my thoughts are with his family and all those who loved him.

Dan Benson,

Mercer County Executive
