Statement from Asm. Freiman and Asw. Drulis on the Release of Karim Daoud
Flemington, NJ - Our office is overjoyed with the news that Hunterdon County resident Karim Daoud has been reunited with his wife and two children following more than nine and a half months in Immigration and Customs Enforcement custody. Mr. Daoud, who has lived in Hunterdon County for over twenty years, was detained during a routine appointment to renew his work authorization paperwork.
Mr. Daoud has consistently sought to comply with the requirements of our nation’s immigration system and has demonstrated his commitment to following the law. His release allows his family, who are American citizens, to spend this holiday season together, underscoring the important need of ensuring that immigration enforcement is carried out in a manner that respects both the rule of law and the dignity of individuals.
“This is welcome news for Mr. Daoud, his family, and for our community,” said Assemblywoman Mitchelle Drulis. “But simply put, he should not have been separated from his family for this long. We call on our federal partners to ensure that immigration processes are fair, transparent, and consistent with our values as a nation.”
“We are thrilled for Karim and his family that they are finally united.” Said Assemblyman Roy Freiman, “ We thank the community for never giving up, and thank Governor Murphy, Senator Zwicker, and our federal partners for their support.”
We extend our gratitude to the community members and organizations who provided support during this period. Our office will continue to assist Mr. Daoud and his family as they resolve outstanding questions related to his case.
