Statement from DNC Chair Ken Martin on Donald Trump’s Address to the Nation
Tonight, Donald Trump addressed the nation in an attempt to explain his failure to tackle the issues facing Americans. It’s clear that Trump and Republicans are terrified of the 2026 midterms — and it’s no wonder why. Trump has taken a wrecking ball to the economy, resulting in skyrocketing costs for families, farmers, and small businesses, and a hollowed-out job market. He’s spent his second term protecting the ultrarich and powerful at the expense of everyday Americans — and now he’s scrambling to clean up his mess.
DNC Chair Ken Martin released the following statement on Donald Trump’s address to the nation:
“Donald Trump has lost the economy, is losing his mind, and is going to lose the midterms. Tonight, Americans watched him and asked themselves: This is the guy in charge? Over the course of 20 minutes, Donald Trump tried to sell us all a shit sandwich, desperate to convince the American people (and even convince himself) that he isn't a complete and utter failure. Let's summarize Trump's first year back in office: He skyrocketed prices with his chaotic trade war, triggered mass layoffs, and priced millions out of health care — all while digging through the pockets of taxpayers to give massive tax cuts to CEOs and billionaires.
“When you can't afford to keep the heat on this winter, that's on Trump. When you have to put groceries back on the shelf because the total rang up more than expected, that's on Trump. When you can't pay for your health insurance in January, that's on Trump. His own Chief of Staff admitted that the president is causing people real pain, House Republicans are in open revolt, and Trump's approval ratings continue to bottom out. And all he seems to care about is his $400 million ballroom to entertain his ultrawealthy donors. Trump is wrecking America, people are fed up, and Democrats are stepping up with concrete plans to fix his disaster. Trump can keep burying his head in the sand, but voters are going to reject Republicans in November.”
Trump is in hot water, and he knows it: A new Reuters/Ipsos poll revealed that Trump’s approval rating has slipped to 39% — one of the lowest levels of his current term. On top of that, nearly 70% of Americans disapprove of Trump’s handling of the economy, and most Republicans have rated Trump’s economy negatively. Six in 10 say prices are rising faster than their income, and a staggering 75% of voters blame Trump for rising costs.
Fact Check: Trump’s economy has been a failure. Despite promising to lower prices on “Day One,” CPI and PCE inflation are rising at a faster pace than when Trump took office, and two-thirds of analysts in a recent survey predicted even higher prices next year. Americans are struggling to afford sky-high costs on everyday necessities like groceries, utility bills, health care, housing, and transportation. On top of that, the job market is in peril — nearly 1.2 MILLION layoffs have been announced this year, and the unemployment rate has risen to 4.6%, the highest since September 2021. Despite Trump’s claims about wage growth, inflation-adjusted wages have only increased 0.3% in the three quarters since Trump took office, after increasing nearly 2% in the three quarters before Trump took office.
Fact Check: To make matters worse, Trump’s so-called “One Big Beautiful Bill” gave billionaires massive tax cuts while making the largest cuts to health care and food assistance in history. Tonight, Trump bragged about the tax cuts in his Big, Ugly Bill, but here’s the reality: The temporary “no tax on tips” and “no tax on overtime” provisions are limited and help only a tiny sliver of workers — who will get hurt worst by the devastating cuts to Medicaid and SNAP. And the bill does not really eliminate taxes on Social Security, which two-thirds of seniors already don’t pay taxes on.
