Trump’s Withdrawal from Global Organizations is Yet Another Stain on U.S. Credibility

For Immediate Release: January 8, 2026

WASHINGTON, D.C. — President Trump started the process yesterday of withdrawing the United States from 66 international organizations, including 30 United Nations and other global bodies dedicated to fighting climate change and eradicating poverty and violence. In response, Global Trade Watch Director Melinda St. Louis issued the following statement:

“As Trump’s ICE thugs continue their lawless reign of terror on U.S. citizens and non-citizens alike, and with his illegal military action in Venezuela ongoing, this new and shocking abdication of international obligations is the latest evidence that this administration has rejected laws, norms, and common decency in favor of brute force.

“Trump’s contempt for international efforts to build peace and solidarity continues to shred the nation’s international credibility and will cause irreparable damage to current and future generations both at home and abroad. As climate harms escalate, choosing withdrawal is a shortsighted, profoundly irresponsible retreat from international leadership when it is needed more than ever.”
