The Return of the Janitor in Hudson County

The snakeskin boots.

The tool box.

The chalkboard with extra chalk.

It all added up to one thing on Wednesday night: the presence of veteran Hudson County operative Tom Bertoli in Bayonne.

Originally from North Bergen, Bertoli, who’s worked in Hudson campaigns going back to the seventies, has saddled up with former Assemblyman Jason O’Donnell (D-31), who’s running for mayor of the maritime burgh.

The operative was most recently keenly associated with Jersey City Mayor Steven Fulop.

Now, “Tommy and his crew are all in with O’Donnell,” a source told InsiderNJ prior to O’Donnell’s kickoff.

“He’s a gentlemen,” Bertoli said when asked why he backs said candidate, who, in genteel fashion, took the mic from his loving wife of 16 years, and proceeded to eviscerate incumbent Mayor Jimmy Davis.

The oration turned heads.

“I was surprised to hear him make such a negative speech at his kickoff,” Bertoli rival (and Jimmy Davis diehard) Paul Swibinski observed from afar. “That clean campaign pledge didn’t last long.”
