Sen. McKeon Response to President Trump’s Election Security Address

McKeon

Senator John F. McKeon (D-27) issued the following statement in response to President Trump’s Address on election security:

Tonight's address was yet another attempt to undermine Americans' faith in our democratic institutions by reviving baseless conspiracy theories about our elections.

Instead of uniting the country, the President chose once again to spread claims that have been repeatedly rejected by courts, election officials, and independent reviews.

Repeatedly questioning legitimate election results without credible evidence weakens public confidence, fuels division and is an attack on our longstanding institutions.

Every eligible American deserves both secure elections and equal access to the ballot box. These are not competing values.

The so-called SAVE Act is being sold as an election security measure, but it risks disenfranchising millions of eligible Americans by imposing burdensome documentation requirements to register to vote despite existing federal laws that already prohibit non-citizens from voting in federal elections.

For more than two centuries, the peaceful transfer of power and respect for the rule of law have defined the American experiment.

Our democracy is strongest when every eligible voter can cast a ballot freely, every lawful vote is counted accurately, and every candidate accepts the outcome. That is how we preserve public trust. That is how we honor our Constitution. And that is how we ensure our republic remains strong for generations to come.
